Thomas 'Tom' Nelson, 73, of 566 K Ave., died March 15, 2005, of a heart ailment at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 19, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets with Rev. Gary Freel officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery.

Mr. Nelson was born in Boone on Nov. 17, 1931, the son of Walter and Ruth (Sturtz) Nelson. He graduated from Boone High School in 1950.

He served with the Iowa National Guard for several years. He began working for Fred Appenzeller at Boone Locker Service in early 50's and he later became owner/operator from 1960 until 1993 when he retired.

He married Pam Mabe on June 7, 1989, at Custer, S. D. He was a member of the Hunt & Fish Club and a life time member of the Iowa State Trail Riders Association. As a youth, he helped his grandfather on his farm.

Survivors include his wife Pam of Boone; two sons Gary Nelson and wife Deb of Ames and Justin Nelson of Boone; two daughters Lisa Ballantyne of Nevada and Melanie Williams and husband Ray of Boone; one brother Larry Nelson and wife Janice of Woodward; seven grandchildren Heath, Cole, Savannah, and Kaylee Nelson, Brooke and Kyle Williams and Brittany Ballantyne; father-in-law Bob Mabe; brother-in-law Dave Mabe.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Friday from noon until 9 p.m. where family will be present from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Visitation continues Saturday at the chapel from 8 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
