Velda Brainard, 97, formerly of 1813 Crawford St., Boone, died at the Boone County Hospital Sunday. She had been a resident at the Ogden Manor in Ogden for the past 11 months. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone, with the Rev. Jessica Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
She was born Feb. 8, 1907, in rural Boone County, the daughter of Frank and Lura Bessie (King) Otis. Her family moved into Boone when she was a small child. She graduated from Boone High School in 1924 and she attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On April 21, 1925, she married Harley Brainard at Boone. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 1985.
During her life, Velda was a homemaker. She lived as a child at 1813 Crawford St., Boone and returned to her childhood home to live with her young family in 1938. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flowers inside and outside her home and collected African violets. She enjoyed the comforts her cats provided.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in April 1985, and two brothers, Charles Otis and Ralph Otis. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Veale and her husband John of Boone; a son, Charles Brainard of Junction, Texas; four grandchildren, Gail Brainard Herwehe and her husband, Jerry, of Harriman, Tenn., Timothy Veale and his wife Kellie of ames, Tom Veale and his wife Debbie of Palos Verdes, Calif., and Catherine Veale Reed and her husband Chris of San Francisco, Calif.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to greet friends. Visitation continues Thursday morning from 8 to time of service.
Memorials may be given to the Boone Area Humane Society or the First United Methodist Church. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
