Vernon 'Vern' Thuney, 72, of 113 Linn St., died of heart failure at the Boone County Hospital on Saturday, Sept. 27. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jessica Johnston officiating. Burial was in the Bass Point Cemetery. A formal folding and presentation of the American flag was conducted by the Boone Veterans Council and a Masonic service was held at the funeral chapel Tuesday evening.

He was born March 14, 1931, in Bemidji, Minn., the son of Joseph and Mable (Lingren) Thuney. He attended high school in Bemidji and served with the U.S. Army prior to the Korean War. He married Judith 'Judy' Eastberg in Las Vegas on Feb. 14, 1979.

In earlier years, Vern was an iron worker in the Northwest. He later owned and operated a logging company in Minnesota and then started a trucking company in Minnesota. He moved to Boone in the early 1970s where he established Vern Thuney Trucking. He was a member of the Mirza Masonic Lodge 609 and the Fez B Shrine Club, both of Pilot Mound, the Za-Ga-Zig Shriners, the Des Moines Consistory, Boone B.P.O. Elks 563, Moose Lodge 104, and he was a social member of both the Boone Golf & Country Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed traveling in his motor home and camping at Don Williams Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and two daughters. He is survived by his wife, Judy, of Boone; two sons, Michael Thuney of Boone and Doug Thuney and his wife Mindy of Beulah, N.D.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gerry Allen and her husband Vince of Ramsey, Minn., and Verna Donovan and her husband Terry of Beaverton, Ore.; one step-son, Scott Sovereign of Osaka, Japan; one step-daughter, Camella Brueggeman and her husband, Chris, of Ogden; a daughter-in-law Kathy Thuney of Big Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Alverna Wirkus of Hibbing, Minn., and Dolores Gustafson of Lake Itasca, Minn.; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Boone Area Humane Society or to the family to establish a memorial at a later date.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, was in charge of the arrangements.
