Werner Nissen, 70, Pilot Mound, died Friday, Jan. 9, at the Boone County Hospital from cancer. His body has been cremated and memorial services were Wednesday in Dayton at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Bruce Lakamp was officiant. Burial will be at a later date.

He was born June 9, 1933, in Leaf Valley, Minn., the son of John and Lieschen (Leu) Nissen. He married Twila Snider at Rock Falls, Iowa Dec. 17, 1953.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. While living in New Hampton, he worked for Chickasaw County as a heavy equipment operator. The couple moved to Pilot Mound in 1960 and he was a heavy equipment operator for Van Sickle Construction of Ogden, Boone County Maintenance Department and Heck Construction of Ogden, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the American Legion Groom Kimsey Post 16, the River Riders Saddle Club, and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton. He restored Farmall tractors and enjoyed fishing, woodworking and horses.

He was preceded in death by his father, a son Kelly Joe Nissen and a grandson Kelly Joe Nissen. Survivors include his wife of Pilot Mound, two sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and JoEllen Nissen and Randy and Denise Nissen, all of Boone; his mother of Waterloo; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Carol Nissen of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Tiffany Westberg and Shawn Nissen both of Ogden, and Amanda, Shannon, Holly and Kenny Nissen all of Boone; and two great-grandchildren, Scott Westberg of Ogden and Teighan Nissen of Boone.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets was in charge of arrangements.
