Robert Ed (Bob) Nelson, 85, Harrison Township, died Sunday at Boone County Hospital of complications of a stroke. He was born May 24, 1915, in Boone County, the son of Frank G. and May (Whalen) Nelson. He married Gladys Irene Allie June 21, 1943, in Boone County.

He attended county school in Harrison Township and graduated from Story City High School. He then attended Iowa State University in the early 1940s, taking ROTC and agriculture classes. He lived all of his life in Boone County and farmed in Harrison Township. He also delivered the Des Moines Register Sunday paper and the daily paper for seven years and he sealed corn grain bins for the ASCA office in Boone. He also was a Snapper lawn mower dealer, fixing and selling lawn mowers for several years. In addition, he staked and opened graves in the St. Paul Cemetery in northeast Boone County. He was a member of the Mackey United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher. He also did the lawncare, was a lay speaker at area Methodist churches and was a member of the Church Builders Club. He was an active member and served in various offices of the Farm Bureau of Boone, and was a member of and served as a soil conservation commissioner with the Soil Conservation of Boone County for 25 years. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Lodge No. 72, AF & AM, a member of and had served as Worthy Patron and Chaplain of the Magi Chapter No. 139, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Bethpage Shrine, No. 17, Order White Shrine of Jerusalem of Boone, Iowa and Judea Shrine, No. 16, Order White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Supreme Council Order of the Amaranth Court No. 6 of Ames, holding various offices in them. He enjoyed repairing small engines and taking pictures with his camera.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Roger in 1971. Survivors include his wife of Story City; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Larry Egemo of Story City; two grandchildren, Martin Dean Egemo of Ames, and Beth Ann Handly and her husband, Brad of Story City; one great-grandson, Chase Allen Handly of Story City; one sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Willard Lee of Torrance, Calif.; one niece and one nephew, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mackey United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will be in the Mackey Cemetery adjacent to the church.

Friends may call at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday at the funeral home from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and at the church from 11:30 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be given to the family.
