Thomas "Tom" Gau, 55, 822 W. Fourth St., Boone, died Saturday at Boone County Hospital of complications of liver failure. He was born Sept. 12, 1946, in Little Falls, MN, the son of Wilfred and Viola (Rick) Gau. He married Linda Laurian Feb. 14, 1969, in Brainerd, MN.

He was a 1965 graduate of Brainerd High School. He was licensed as a plumbing and heating specialist and was employed at Duncan Heating and Pritchard Plumbing before working as a maintenance mechanic at Iowa State University in the student housing complex. He was an active member of First Evangelical Free Church in Boone and served as a scout and Awana leader. His hobbies included following NASCAR racing, the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. He also enjoyed the company of his dog, Colby.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Kelly Gau of Lake Mills and James and Janelle Gau of Pendleton, OR; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lori and David Van Cannon of Boone and Darci Gau of Ames; one brother and sister-in-law, Rick and June Gau of Prior Lake, MN; one sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Jeff Backstrom of Minneapolis, MN; three grandchildren, Aspen and Emerald Gau of Lake Mills and Jacob Gau of Pendleton, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Evangelical Free Church with Don Howard officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd, MN with the Rev. Randall Ahlberg officiating.

Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
