Boone County Democrat, Wednesday, August 30, 1876, Boone, Iowa, Page: 3

Quite a serious accident occurred at Logan & Canfields coal bank yesterday about 1 o’clock p.m. A large rock weighing all of 1,500 was to have been moved, and it was so firmly embedded that it was thought necessary to blast it, but just as the charge had been placed under it the mass gave way and struck a miner named John Denning in the small of is back, mashing him pretty badly. He was taken to his home in Boonesboro, where he lies in a precarious condition.
