Charles Schoonover, carpenter and contractor, Boone was born January 19, 1829 in Tioga county, New York, and when twelve years of age his parents removed to Hardin county, Ohio, where he was raised and learned his trade, in 1854 he came to Iowa, settling in Oskaloosa, where he resided until 1856 when he removed to Nevada, Story county, remaining there for eleven years, in 1867 he came to Boone, he has worked at his trade since he was sixteen years of age, with the exception of two years when he was in California, from 1850 to 1852, having taken the overland route in 1850, has been interested in the contracting of all the main buildings of Boone and in fact has had the contract for nearly half the buildings of the place, both business houses and dwellings in 1875 he was elected city assessor and has held the position continuously since, notwithstanding the fact of his being a Democrat and the city of Boone being overwhelmingly Republican, which certainly speaks well for the esteem in which he is held by the citizens of the city, February 14, 1856 he was married to Sarah Downing a native of Pickaway county, Ohio, they have two children living, Minnie and Jennie have lost two Emma and Mattie.
