DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
Fred C. Davis, first lieutenant, 108th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in acton near Ronssoy, France, September 29-30, 1918. He successfully held a trench several hundred yards in advance of the Hindenburg line, under heavy shell fire and machine gun fire, with a detachment which he had organized with men from different organizations. The following morning he led his detachment still farther, cleaning up about 500 yards of enemy trenches.Residence at appointment: Madrid, Iowa
