Philander Wells, dealer in staple and fancy groceries, Boone, was born in St Lawrence county, New York, October 9, 1837, in 1857 he came West, locating in Illinois, where he remained two years and then returned to New York and in August, 1862, enlisted in the One Hundred and Sixth New York Infantry, serving until after the close of the war, and when mustered out was first lieutenant of company D, he participated in all the battles of the Shenandoah Valley, the Wilderness, Winchester, and at Cedar Creek was wounded by a minie ball through his left shoulder, he came to Boone from New York State in 1869, and has since been engae3d in business here, he was married December 25, 1865 to Laura N Fulton, who died in may 1867, leaving one child: Mary M, in 1869 he was married to his present wife Elma S Cook of Boone
