EX-COUNTY SUPERVISOR VAL SCHMIT AT AGE 89
Val Schmit of 1513 W. 4th St., former Black Hawk Co. supervisor, who served in that office for 15 years from District No. 6, representing Barclay, Fox and Poyner townships, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital at the age of 89 of a heart condition.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Kenneth Ryan, pastor, officiating. There will be Rosary services at the Oppold Funeral home at 8 p.m. Wednesday by the Catholic Order of Foresters and at 3 p.m. Thursday and at 8:15 p.m. Thursday by the parish.

BORN NEAR GILBERTVILLE
He was born on April 27, 1882, near Gilbertville, the son of William and Catherine Wirts Schmit. He married Matilda Mangrich on May 5, 1908 in Gilbertville. They farmed near Gilbertville until 1956 when they moved to Waterloo. His wife died in May of 1965.

Mr. Schmit served as supervisor from 1939 through 1953, when he retired. He was a Democrat.
Mr. Schmit was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

130 DESCENDANTS
Surviving are five sons, Lawrence, of Rt. 2, Jesup; Irvin, chairman of the Waterloo Park Commission; Eugene of Rt. 1, Jesup; Edwin of 1021 Columbia St.; and Cletus of Rt. 1, Jesup; five daughters, Mrs. Marcella Saddler, 1864 Independence Ave.; Mrs. Alfred Frost of Rt. 1, Jesup; Mrs. Joseph Thome of Raymond; Mrs. Francis Kresser of Independence; Mrs. William Weires of Phoenix, Arizona; 67 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Arnold in October of 1962; four brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.

Friends who wish may give memorials to Columbus High School or Don Bosco High School.
