Gilbertville--William Schares, 71, veteran Black Hawk County farmer and a leading merchant of this village until ill health caused his retirement in 1930, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1933 at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo.
He received surgical treatment on May 17, 1930 for an illness which recurred, causing death.
Mr. Schares had been at the hospital abt. 10 days this time. The body was brought to the family residence here late Thursday afternoon from Parrott-Woods Funeral Home in Waterloo.
The funeral was at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Fr. W. J. Cremer officiating. Interment was made in the parish cemetery.
Mr. Schares was born April 17, 1862 in the village of Real, Prussia, Germany, and when three years of age, was brought to the United States by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Schares, who located on a farm south of Gilbertville in 1865. He resided there until his marriage in 1893 to Anna Girsch. They made their home on a farm in the same neighborhood until 1903, when the family moved to Gilbertville. Here he was engaged with his brother, Jacob, in the operation of an implement supply store until 1913, when they disposed of the business. Mr. Schares then opened a harness and shoe repair shop, which he operated until his illness in 1930 obliged him to cease activity.
Survivors in the immediate family are the widow, four daughters and a son--Mrs. Rose Youngblut, Miss Teresa Schares, Gilbertville, Mrs. Beatrice Weiden, La Porte City, Mrs. Stella Schafer, Waterloo, and Dallas W. Schares, Harlingen, Texas. A brother, Jacob, Gilbertville, two sisters, Mrs John Hermann, Parkston, S. Dak., and Mrs. Mary Federspiel, La Porte City. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Pall bearers were John Bornong, Matt Ahles, Joe Delegardelle, Henry Schroeder, Martin Holbach, and Peter Schares.
