MATTHEW BEREND
Matthew Berend, 92, former postmaster of Raymond for 40 years, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday at his home, 206 2cnd St. S., Raymond, of a heart attack.
He was born on 7-3-1874 at Nittle, Germany, the son of Nick and Angela Berend. He came to the United States at the age of seven with his parents to a farm in the Poyner Twp.
He married Ursula Traidl on 1-22-1913 at Raymond. He was a rural mail carrier for three years and was appointed postmaster of Raymond in 1917, serving in that capacity until retirement in 1947.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Raymond, and the Holy Name Society, and a charter member of St. Mary's Court 1234, Catholic Order of Foresters and received his 50 year pin in 1953.
He was a member of the retired civil servant employees association.
Survivors are: two daughters: Mrs. Vern Seidel and Mrs. Bernard Pint, four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on 3-1-1961, one daughter, two brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, Raymond. A Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the parish and the Holy Name Society; at 3 p.m. Wednesday by the Catholic Order of Foresters, all at the Oppold Funeral Home.
