Max C. Ortner, 81, of Waterloo, died Sunday, June 26, 2016 at home.

He was born September 25, 1934 in Dunkerton, son of Casper "Cap" and Clara Kurtz Ortner. He married Pattie Weber on September 17, 1956 in Waterloo. She died June 18, 2011.

Max was employed with John Deere Tractor Works for 32 1/2 years, retiring in 1991. He was a master carpenter doing renovations and improvements throughout his whole life.

Survivors include: three sons, Richard Ortner of Walkersville, Maryland, Thomas (Becky) Ortner of Porter, Texas and William Ortner of Waterloo; four daughters, Jeannine (Howard) Wilson of Evansdale, Mary Kay (Kirk) Loy and Peggy (Gene) Marmie, both of Cedar Falls and Donna (Dave) Hayes of Waterloo; 23 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Victor (Charlene) Ortner of Independence; five sisters-in-law, Milly Ortner of Cedar Rapids, Delores Ortner of Oelwein, Marcy Ortner of Independence, Lucille (Dick) Larsen of Spencer, Wisconsin and Doris (Bernie) Brown of Dunkerton.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Marguerite Schmitt; and six brothers, Leo, Roy, Eugene, Ronald, Hugh and Dennis Ortner.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Saturday.
Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

One of Max's ministries was distributing communion to thousands of homebound, nursing homes and hospitals for 35 years.
