Obituary.
Mrs. A. S. Smith died at her home, corner of Third and Washington, at 4 o’clock yesterday, of old age. She was born in Connecticut and lived for some years in Pennsylvania before coming to Cedar Falls in 1856. She has been a resident of this city since that time, just fifty years. Her husband died in in{sic} 1889. She was the mother of four children, three of who survive her. They are Sarah A. Bellamy, of Nashua; E. P. Smith, of Cedar Falls; Mrs. Ella SW. Dyer, of Carthage, Mo.
The funeral took place from the late residence of the deceased Thursday afternoon at one o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. E. Snowden, pastor of the Congregational church, to which organization the deceased belonged.
The death of Mrs. Smith again emphasizes the fact that the old settlers, one by one, are being gathered to their fathers. Fifty years ago, when Mrs. Smith, then a lady in the prime of life, came to Cedar Falls there was not much of a town here. Along with the pioneers of that day she did her part well and faithfully in helping to lay the foundations of the great state of Iowa. To these early settlers those of us who are now actively engaged with the present can well afford to pause long enough to lay upon the bier of the departed a wreath of just appreciation for all that she endured and for all that she accomplished during her long years of residence in the city, and as these old people pass off at the stage of action may the inspiration of their heroic deeds and memory of their untiring industry and devotion to all that was good and uplifting come as a benediction to those who are left behind.—Cedar Falls Daily Record.
