Karon Hines

Karon Hines was born in Waterloo, Iowa on November 10, 1950, to Clarence “Jim” Kalkbrenner and Helene Diedrick. She attended primary school at Immanuel Lutheran through the 8th grade. She was a student at East High School and graduated in the spring of 1968.

On August 18th, 1968, Karon married Richard Day. The newly married couple moved to Charleston, SC where Richard was stationed at the Naval base.

They moved back to Waterloo the following year, and on March 1, 1971, she gave birth to a handsome baby boy named Shannon Michael. Two and a half years later, on October 16, 1973, they made their family complete upon the birth of their beautiful baby girl Monica Catherine.

In 1982, after her divorce, Karon moved to Waterloo from Gilbertville with her kids. She spent the next few years cleaning houses and working as a bartender.

Karon remarried in May of 1989 to Jim Hines. The couple lived in Evansdale together until Jim’s death in 2004. Karen moved out of her house in Evansdale and moved into Fox Meadow Apartments where she lived for several years.

After some health issues, Karon moved into NorthCrest Specialty Care at the end of 2013. She loved her roommate Anna, and enjoyed spending time with Janet, her best friend. Her favorite activities were Bingo, where her favorite prize was a can of diet root beer, and Happy Hour, where she enjoyed a glass of white wine.

Karon passed away on September 8, 2020 due to complications of COVID-19. She is survived by her children Shannon and Monica.
