Biography

Dennis L. Geary, 71, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, August 15, at NorthCrest Specialty Care.

He was born April 3, 1949, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Norman F. and Frances G. Hannaman Geary. He attended Longfellow Elementary, Peet Junior High, and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1968. He also attended Hawkeye Tech in 1969.

Dennis enlisted into the US Army on February 6, 1969 in Des Moines serving during the Vietnam Conflict until his honorable discharge December 7, 1971 in Ft. Carson, CO. He went on to serve full-time in the Iowa Army National Guard as a fuel distribution system worker, instructor and supervisor, and supply sergeant until retiring as a POL technician after 20 plus years. He was the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal.

Dennis married Bonnie Lou Nordahl April 17, 1969, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Waterloo, where they were longtime members. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, auctions, antiquing, and trains.

He was an organizer and treasurer for the 1989 Vietnam veterans reunion, co-chairman of the Black Hawk County Vietnam veterans memorial committee, counseled veterans in Vietnam support groups in Waterloo, spoke to high school students, and was a sponsor to the church youth group.

He is survived by his wife of Waterloo; four sons, Tony and Troy Geary both of Cedar Rapids, Bobby (Annette) Geary, and Justin (Erin) Geary both of Waverly; daughter, Dawn (Jason) Helmrichs of Waverly; seven grandchildren, Tristan, Connor, and August Geary, Stone and Cash Helmrichs, and Landen and Aedin Ruth; two sisters, Danette (Steve) Ravn of Cedar Falls‚ and Sabrina (Mike) Queen of Burleson‚ TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Jean Dinius, Marcia Johnson, and Sharon Lampman; and an infant brother.
