Biography

Dorothy I. Frye, 96, of Waterloo, Iowa, went to her heavenly home Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Friendship Village Pavilion.

She was born March 18, 1921 in Rodman, Iowa, daughter of Clyde and Vera Gray Airhart. She graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Dodge, IA. Dorothy married Harvey Frye March 29, 1941 at the United Methodist Church in Cameron, MO. They shared a beautiful love story for 72 years and their life together touched all who knew them. He preceded her in death May 2, 2013.

Dorothy worked as a registered nurse for more than 40 years at every Waterloo hospital. She also worked for several local doctors, and in First Aid at Rath Packing Co., and taught at Allen School of Nursing. She continued her career at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ retiring in 1986.

She will be remembered for her sweet, kind heart and her love for making beautiful flowers grow. She enjoyed baking delicious cookies for her family and was an amazing seamstress who could mend and make anything she was asked to.

She enjoyed doing chores around her house and always kept it spotless. She didn't sit down very much and her family referred to her as the “Energizer Rabbit.” If you would find her sitting, she would be deeply engrossed in a novel of some kind. She read many, many books throughout her lifetime and her favorite author was Danielle Steele.

Harvey and Dorothy decided to build their dream home in Sun City, Arizona back in 1980 where they lived for 27 years. They enjoyed landscaping their yard with beautiful cactus, lemon and orange trees. They had a large circle of friends there and also loved having their family come to visit. They often traveled back by car to Waterloo during the summer months and would enjoy the cooler summers here. They eventually sold their home and moved back to Waterloo in 2007 where they resided at Landmark Commons.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kathye Bedard of Waterloo; a grandson, Jeffrey Bedard of Johnson City, TN; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Tim) Mauro of West Des Moines; 6 great-grandchildren; Taylor, Madalyn, Justin, Olivia, Jake and Sophia: a sister, Raemona Leonhart of Moundsville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and brothers; Ray, Bob, Eva, Billie, Cly Dean, and George; and a son-in-law, Bob Bedard.
