Obituary for Darleen M. Buehner

Darleen Mae Buehner, 95, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, June 12, 2020, at the Western Home Communities Martin Suites.

She was born March 11, 1925, in Fayette County, Iowa, daughter of Merle Wilson and Nellie Maude (Sankey) Averill. She attended elementary school in Fayette and Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1943. She worked for the Meany Casket Company and Priebe Oil Company. She was united in marriage to Leland Paul Buehner on September 28, 1945, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waterloo. He preceded her in death on February 5, 1991.

Darleen was a constant pillar of support for her family. She was very kind, thoughtful, and a great listener who dedicated her life in service to all. She volunteered cleaning at St. Mary Catholic Church weekly and participated with the St. Mary Craft Club, creating beautiful quilts and preparing for the annual Fall Festivals.

She was also a member of St. Mary Altar and Rosary. Darleen regularly baked cookies for the Red Cross. She especially enjoyed her role as mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her children, James (Catherine) Buehner of Cedar Falls and Michelle Buehner of Oelwein; 11 grandchildren: Joe (Jodi) Buehner, Chris Buehner, Josh (Michelle) Buehner, James (Jennifer) Buehner, Justin Buehner, Andrew Buehner, Maria (Shelton) Brown, Eric (Jenny) Buehner, Greg (Christine) Buehner, Molly (Ben) Nietzel and Ellen (Jason) Luders; 20 great-grandchildren: Kristen Buehner, Kayla Buehner, Taylor Buettner, Karess Buehner, Lucas and Lindsey Buehner, Noah Brown, Kristian Brown, Jackson Buehner, Gianna, Ella, Colette, Gemma, Philomena and Chiara Nietzel, Natalie and Nellie Buehner, Otto, Henry and Olive Luders; one great-great-grandchild, Cohen Kelly; and a brother, Ray Averill of Cedar Falls.

She wa preceded in death by a son, Stephen D. Buehner; two brothers, Robert and Charles Averill; and three sisters, June Dunn, LaVonne Turner and Beulah LaPole.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 19th at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
