Obituary

Duane D. Schaan, 72, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, June 5, at his home.

He was born January 21, 1948 in Rugby, North Dakota, the son of Pius and Regardia Pfeifer Schaan.

Duane was married to Mary Ellen LaBelle on November 11, 1972 at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot, ND.

He attended Assumption Abbey Prep School in Richardton, North Dakota, then Minot State College where he received his teaching degree in social studies. Duane furthered his education at Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD and was one of the few to earn a BS in Respiratory Therapy.

He was the Director of Cardiopulmonary at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital for 35 years, retiring in December of 2014.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen of Waterloo, a son, Nathan (Colleen) Schaan of Owasso, OK., two daughters, Stephanie (Tim) Butler of Waterloo and Jessica (José) Garcia of Palm Bay, FL., two grandchildren, Liam and Jonah Garcia, and one on the way, a brother, Bill Schaan of Rugby, ND and four sisters, Diane (Ron) Johnson of Towner, ND, Elaine Schaan of Rugby, ND, Jane (Tim) Fasching of Portland, OR., and Mary Kay Barth of Dickinson, ND.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Due to COVID-19, a private family memorial mass will be held, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Memorial Mass will be livestreamed on the St. Edward Catholic Church website: www.sted.org. at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family with arrangements.
