Florence M. Tovar

Florence Maxine (Lehman) Tovar, 84, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, formerly of Waterloo, passed away on June 4, 2020, surrounded by family.

Florence was born in Waterloo on May 24, 1936, to Chris H. and Hulda (Stromer) Lehman. She attended West High, where she graduated from in 1954. On January 29, 1955, Florence was united in marriage to Magdalano “Mike” Tovar at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

The two lived in Waterloo where Florence worked at Arrowhead Hardware. She also worked for Lutheran Social Services at a group home for boys. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and taking care of plants. She was volunteered at both Meals on Wheels and Lutheran Ministries, where she was also a board member. She was an active Girl Scout leader for many years.

Florence was very active in her church, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She always took care of her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Rebecca Tovar (Richard Atkins), Terry (David) Peña, and Thomas Tovar; two brothers, Robert Lehman and Harry Lehman; two sisters, Darlene (Bill) Sherwood and Edna Briscoe; and five grandchildren, Adrienne Atkins, Trei Tovar, Tevin Tovar, Hector Peña, and Tenley Tovar.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Harold, Herbert, Ray, John, and Vernon; and three sisters, Evelyn Sapp, Margaret Springer, and Viola Klebs.

Visitation will be held at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories on Friday, June 12, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held, but all are welcome to come to the visitation. Please direct memorials to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
