Jerry Smith

Jerry Dean Smith, 71, of Trimble, Missouri, and formerly of Waterloo, passed away at home surrounded by family on May 23, 2020.

Jerry was born to Orin Harrison and Vivian M. (Ewalt) Smith in Iowa City on January 18, 1949. He graduated from West High in 1967. On January 13, 2000, Jerry and Isella Franceschi united in marriage in Decorah. In May of 2000, the two relocated to Kansas City, Missouri.

Left to cherish Jerry’s memory are his wife, Isella; a sister, Bridget Yanes; a sister-in-law, Ann Smith; three children, Jeremy (Teresa) Smith, Julie Miller (David Hensch), and Joel Smith; six step-children, Linda (Lamar) Grayson, Martin Sperry, Herman Sperry, William Sperry, Paul (Cathy) Sperry, and Lya (Jerome) Boyer; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim Smith and Jack Smith; and a sister, Bonnie Wyles.

He enjoyed collecting cars and toy cars, and he loved watching Old Westerns. Jerry served in the United States Army in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal twice.

A private family service will be held for Jerry, followed by burial with military honors at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein. Please direct memorials to The Military Order of the Purple Heart, DAV, or VFW.
