WATERLOO, IOWA - Ivan Bates, 44, Waterloo, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 25, at his home following a heart attack.

Military funeral service was held Thursday afternoon, Feb. 28, at Waterloo.

He was born June 27, 1918, son of Merton and Marie Sander Bates, Clinton county. He had lived in Waterloo the last 15 years. He had made his home in Sabula before moving to Waterloo.

On Oct. 27, 1945, he was married to Velma Larson, of Martelle, at Clinton. He had been employed with the Waterloo street department for the last 15 years.

He entered the service of the United States army in 1941 and served three years in overseas duty. He had the rank of Technician 4th grade at the time of his honorable discharge in 1945.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger; and a daughter, Juanita, all at home; three brothers, Alta, Sabula; Elvitt, Keystone; and Chief Warrant Officer Alpheas, Mineral Wells, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
