Shirley Ann Newsom was born on July 9, 1927, in Elgin, the daughter of Charles and Edith (Alton) Wander. She grew up near Clermont and attended country school. Shirley graduated from West Union High School and then went to Gates Business College.

On November 28, 1952, she was united in marriage to Wesley Charles Newsom in West Union. He preceded her in death on November 13, 1984.

Shirley worked as a secretary for Interstate Power Company, Construction Machinery, Rath’s, and Linden United Methodist Church. She was a member of Linden United Methodist Church where she served on the Ad Council and Leadership Committee.

She also volunteered at Windsor Nursing Home and enjoyed knitting, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren. Shirley died at the age of 92 on April 28, 2020, at Friendship Village in Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Dorothy Kleppe; and a nephew, Duane Kleppe.

Shirley is survived by two sons, Darrell (Fran) Newsom of Waterloo and Craig Newsom of Carlinville, Illinois; two grandchildren, Isabelle and Evangeline; a niece, Donna Hammer; and a nephew, David Kleppe.
