Obituary for Helen I. Hannan

Helen Irene Hannan, age 89, of Western Home Communities - Stanard Family Assisted Living, Cedar Falls, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

She was born on September 8, 1930 in Lebanon, Indiana, to George Harold Couchman and Gertrude Christina (Heath) Couchman.

Helen graduated from Lebanon Senior High School in 1948. She married William (Bill) Moore Hannan on October 23, 1948. Helen, Bill, and their children moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, in September 1964. Bill passed away on May 25, 1992.

While living in Indiana, Helen worked for Indiana Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator. After moving to Iowa she did child care for a number of years. She worked at the Cedar Falls Woolco store, and after they closed, Helen worked a number of years at the Cedar Falls WalMart, retiring in 2005 at age 75.

She was a member of Valley View Baptist Church for many years, before joining Waterloo First Baptist Church, after moving to Stanard Family Assisted Living, she faithfully attended services in their chapel.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; parents; two brothers, Gene and James Couchman; four sisters-in-law, Wanda Hannan, Barbara Hannan, Wanda Couchman, and Laura Dell Couchman; and three brothers-in-law, George, Harold, and Robert Hannan.

Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bob Kennedy of Cedar Falls; her son, William “Bill” Harold Hannan of Lebanon, IN; five grandchildren: Brandy Cowell of Waterloo, Michelle Hannan (Chris) Poyner of Anderson, IN, Melody Hannan of Cedar Falls, Jill Thorpe of Waterloo, and William (Sha’la) Hannan of Anderson, IN; 11 great grandchildren: Lane Schwickerath, Dylan Thorpe, Audrienne Kennedy, Autumn Hannan, Maddigan Hannan, Gavin Thorpe, Levi Hannan, Jaden Thorpe, Malcolm Hannan, Aveline Hannan, and Lochlan Hannan; a brother, Robert (Virginia) Couchman of Zephyrhills, FL; several nieces and nephews and their families residing in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, and Utah.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there will be no visitation. A private family service and interment in Waterloo Memorial Park will occur on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Memorials may be directed to Helen Hannan, 943 Parkway Ct. Cedar Falls or the donor’s favorite charity.
