Biography

Bruce Gordon Jacobs, 63, of Elk Run Heights, died Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at his home.

He was born to J.C. “Jake” and Donna Branstetter Jacobs September 10, 1956 at Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo. He weighed one pound, 10 ounces and he survived. He was the youngest of three children. He had a sister, Toni Lea, and a brother. He attended Waterloo Schools and he graduated in 1975. Bruce was the first male to graduate from Walnut Ridge Baptist Academy (now Waterloo Christian School). He then went to Hawkeye Institute of Technology where he took nurse’s aide orderly classes.

After his time at Hawkeye, he went to work at Sartori Hospital and then the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. From there he returned to work at Schoitz Hospital on the surgical units.

He met his life partner of 34 years, Gordon Mikesh, in 1979. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1986. He found work, working for a gentleman on the Country Club Plaza doing private duty nurse aide, domestic work. He then went to work at the Ritz Carlton Hotel where he did environmental services, cleaning in public areas, and for Harrah’s Casino as a cleaner, where he worked until 1998. When he and Gordon returned to Iowa, they purchased their fifth and final home. Gordon preceded him in death December 17, 2013.

Bruce enjoyed remodeling the homes he and Gordon shared. He loved his dogs which he called, “his kids.”

He met a lot of people in his life both rich and poor. He always tried to help people no matter what!

Bruce loved to cook, bake, and entertain. He also enjoyed restoring furniture and collecting antiques, tending to his flower garden, and making quilts with embroidered blocks.

He saw God in the flowers, sky, trees and all living things, and in the Bible, God’s Holy Word! He never forgot that God spared his life at birth.

Bruce is survived by his kids, Bella and Bridget; acquired sons, Mikal (September) Pepperling of Elk Run Heights, and Dakoda (Leigha) Pepperling of Evansdale; acquired grandchildren, Gabby, Nora, Rainah; acquired sisters Regina Mora of Elk Run Heights, and Jane Pepperling of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his partner, Gordon; and his sister, Toni.
Private family graveside services will be held at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.
