Biography

Maurice James "Dutch" Harn, 88, of Waterloo, died at NorthCrest Specialty Care on Monday, March 9, 2020, of cancer.

He was born December 4, 1931, on the family farm in rural Dunkerton, the son of Edward Joseph Sr. and Mary Lamb Harn and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1950 and attended ISTC for a year. Dutch served his country in the United States Navy for four years (1951-1955) stationed in Pearl Harbor during the Korean Conflict.

He married Margaret M. “Marge” Jasper on June 5, 1951 at St. John Catholic Church; she died July 25, 2001. He had a close relationship with Sandy Seemann for 18 years until her death in 2019.

Dutch was a Waterloo Police Officer 10 years, worked delivering fuel for Sunray DX Oil Company, ran the Stable Lounge, and finally retired in 2003 after 20 plus years as a bus driver for the Waterloo School System. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Dutch was a very family-oriented man and always made you feel at home. A true Irishman thru and thru with the stories to go along with it. He did have the opportunity to visit Ireland with his friend Sandy and his sister Ceil.

His favorite teams… the Packers and the Cardinals (most of the time) were always on the TV and Packers game trips with his nephews were an adventure themselves. He loved Turner Classic Movies and Fox News.

Dutch is survived by his daughter, Barb (Mike) Varco; son, Mike (Beth Ann) Harn; son, Joe (Mary Beth) Harn; sister-in-law, Sue (Pete) Edmiston; daughter, Kate (Ken) Burr; daughter, Theresa Harn; daughter, Diane McDade; son, Jim (Kelli Jo) Harn; and daughter, Deb (Pat) O'Malley. He was Grandpa to 29; Great Grandpa to 31 (two on the way); Great-Great Grandpa to one; as well as Uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Thomas "Tom" Harn; three sisters, Rosemary "Rita" Schultz, Lucille "Ceil" Kuhlman, and Edna in infancy; a brother, Edward Joseph "Casey" Harn Jr.; and his friend, Sandy Seemann.

Dutch was known by many and will be missed by quite a few more.
