November 14, 1938 - February 15, 2020

Dennis L. Remmert, 81, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Saturday, February 15, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He married Sandra J. Cawelti of Cedar Falls in 1967.

Dennis was born November 14, 1938, in Traer, Iowa, son of Arthur and Veryle (Switzer) Remmert. Soon after he was born, the Remmert family moved to Mason City where he graduated from Mason City High School in 1956.

Following high school, Dennis attended Iowa State Teachers College where he played football and earned All-American honors in 1959. He earned his BA in Business and MA in Physical Education. Dennis had a brief stint in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills before injuries forced him to retire. He returned to the State College of Iowa (renamed in 1961) as a graduate assistant football coach before heading to Iowa Central Community College to coach multiple sports.

Dennis returned to S.C.I. (renamed the University of Northern Iowa in 1967) as an assistant football coach in 1964 where he remained employed until 2001. During his tenure at UNI, Dennis coached multiple defensive position groups and served in leadership roles as Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. He retired from coaching football in 1988 and became an Associate Professor in the school of Health, Physicial Education and Leisure Studies (H.P.E.L.S.) at UNI, until he retired in 2001. Dennis was inducted in the UNI Hall of Fame in 1991.

He is survived by his wife Sandra; two sons, Chad (Kristen) Remmert and Brad (Ann) Remmert all of Cedar Falls; and seven grandchildren: Olivia, Jacob, Sydney, Josie, Calli, Katie, and William.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Cleo and Elise; and a brother, Doug.

Celebration of life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 21st at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Visitation from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 20th at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with a time of sharing at 7:30 pm. The family will also be available one hour before the service on Friday.

Memorials: Gifts to the Dennis Remmert Memorial Scholarship Fund may be directed to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation or St. Patrick’s Church.
