February 11, 1936 - December 22, 2019

Leo D. Campbell, 83, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died from complications of Parkinson's Disease on Sunday, December 22, 2019, at the Western Home Communities Deery Suites surrounded by his family.

He was born February 11, 1936 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Mabel (Ohl) Campbell. Leo married Margaret Mary Sherry on August 18, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from Oelwein High School and Gates Business College in Waterloo.

Leo was Vice President at First Federal Savings and Loan, and was an accountant at both WBM Marine and Goodwill Industries, all in Waterloo. He was a lifetime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, past President of the Waterloo Lions Club, past Board Member of the Black Hawk County Humane Society and was a member of IMA (Institute of Management Accountants).

He loved woodworking, home-improvement projects, bowling (both the alley and lawn varieties), shuffleboard, and gardening, But what Leo enjoyed most was being with family, whether it was vacations to Lake Okoboji, Colorado, or Washington, D.C. (among many others), making homemade ice cream with garden-fresh raspberries on the Fourth of July, or towing water-skiing kids through the sloughs around Harpers Ferry.

Every family member has at least one of Grandpa’s handmade creations, from dollhouses to changing tables, from clocks to mirrors, from shadow boxes to Christmas-card mailboxes, all made with a ton of love in his tiny basement workshop.

Leo is survived by his wife, Margaret Campbell, of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Cheryl (Stephen) Kennedy, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Steven (Jan) Campbell of Minneapolis, Minnesota, David (Annette) Campbell of Norwalk, Iowa and Tim (Stacy) Campbell of Peoria, Illinois; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie (Tim) Felland, Amy (Jon) Tisue, Sean (Amanda) Kennedy, Brennan (Carley) Kennedy, Colby (Jenny) Campbell, Katelyn Campbell, Henry Campbell, Connor Campbell, Jack Campbell, Ian Campbell, Grace Campbell, and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family truly appreciates the loving care provided by the staff at Western Home Deery Suites during Leo’s last years, Unity Point Hospice for their care and guidance during his final hours, and Father Tony Kruse, Sister Madonna Friedman, and Deb Lundberg from Blessed Sacrament Church for easing his transition from this life into eternal life.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation will be 5—7:00 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service at the church.
