Meinard Koop

December 20, 1936 - November 19, 2019

Meinard Koop, Jr. was born December 20th, 1936. He was the son of Meinard and Bertha Koop and grew up on a farm north of New Hartford, Iowa.

At 17, Meinard - in a story he so loved to tell- was at the Butler County Fair and spied the most gorgeous girl he had ever seen. At that instant he knew that girl from Aplington, Bonnie Schurman, was his soul mate. After graduating from New Hartford High School, Meinard attended Iowa State University. He returned home to wed Bonnie on June 20, 1958.

In addition to farming, Meinard worked for Waterloo Corrugated Box/Mead Containers, from which he retired at age 47 in 1984. Meinard and Bonnie enjoyed time with farm and garden, traveling, church, community, and above all, family.

Meinard loved to serve others and that was evident by how he gave his time. He was on the New Hartford and DNH school boards for 39 years, the Lion's Club over 40 years, Farm Bureau, the Election board, Butler County Zoning board, and his New Hartford United Methodist Church for his entire life. There he served as a Sunday School teacher, finance chair, and on various committees. He was an unselfish, patient, honorable, faithful and humble man.

Meinard enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and their activities. He had so much love for his family, but especially Bonnie. The couple celebrated their 61st Anniversary this summer, and had a love that could only be separated by God calling him home. His memories, love and sweet spirit will be with us until we meet again.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie Koop, of New Hartford; two daughters, Lori (Joel Dorman) Koop of Pella, Iowa and Lisa (Greg) Schmitz of rural New Hartford; a son, Steve (Angie) Koop, of rural New Hartford; twelve grandchildren, Michael (Lindsey) Schmitz, Lindsay (Jared) Schmitz Stanley, Ashley (Bryan) Dorman, Matthew (Cathy) Schmitz, Jennifer (Jake) Dorman, Nick Dorman, Daniel Schmitz, Thomas (Kori) Koop, Alexa Schmitz, Jake Dorman, Rachel Koop, Tim Koop; six great grandchildren, Graham Schmitz, Hudson Schmitz, Sawyer Schmitz, Eloise Schmitz, Kooper Schmitz, Dawson Stanley, and two on the way.

Meinard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katherine Koop.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2019, at New Hartford United Methodist Church, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford. Visitation will be 4:00—8:00 p.m. Thursday, and one hour before the service Friday, at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church. Online condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
