Biography

Beth K. Haile, 35, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at her home, surrounded by family and friends, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. She had lived with brain cancer since December 2017.

Beth was born on May 3, 1984, in Charleston, South Carolina, to John and Patricia Taylor Garrison.

She graduated from Summerville High School in Summerville, SC, in 2002; graduated from University of Virginia where she was a Jefferson Scholar in 2006; and completed her PhD in Theological Ethics at the age of 26 from Boston College.

She married Scott Haile on June 6, 2009, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Newton, MA.

Beth was a professor for three years at Carroll College in Helena, MT. She retired to be a full time mother and was passionately committed to classical homeschooling. During this time she wrote a regular column for U.S. Catholic, blogged for CatholicMoralTheology.com, and published scholarly articles on natural law and virtue ethics. Beth loved God, family, friends, running, birding, travel, Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, wine, fine food, and reading to her children. She had dear friends up and down her street and throughout the country.

She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and also attended Unity Presbyterian Church with her husband.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Teresa "Ressie" Haile; three sons, Thomas, Richard, and Nicholas; her parents of Summerville; two sisters, Amanda (Will) Burgess‚ Stanley‚ NC and Brenna (Scott) Hinson‚ Summerville; two brothers, Allen (Melissa) Garrison‚ Ft. Mill‚ SC and Cody (Shane Gibson) Garrison‚ Charleston; and her maternal grandmother, Loraine Taylor‚ Maplewood‚ MN.

Beth is preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Sue Howel, and maternal grandfather, Richard Taylor.

Services:
Memorial Mass will be held at St. Edward Catholic Church on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 10:30 AM. Reception to follow in the church hall.

Cemetery:
Family graveside services were held at Waterloo Cemetery.
