Gertrude Grace Aswegan

March 01, 1921 - October 06, 2019

Gertrude Grace Aswegan, 98, passed away at Edenbrook of Edina in Edina, MN.

She was born March 1, 1921, in Comfrey, Minnesota, daughter of Frank and Bessie (Valentien) Hippen. On September 18, 1945, Gertrude was united in marriage to Luke Awegan, Jr. and the couple moved to Cedar Falls where they were both employed in the dairy business. Luke preceded her in death on November 27, 1967.

Gertrude spent the latter years of working for Don Newberry in his ice cream shop on Main Street in Cedar Falls. In a June 1999 Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier article, Don joked that, at 77 years of age, she had attempted to retire several times, but he kept inviting her back because she was such a hard worker. Her final retirement came in 2004. In 2013, she moved to Edina to be closer to her sons.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and 2 sisters, Grace Schriock and Delores Gatzlaff. She is survived by her sons, Gerald (Arzu) Aswegan of Bloomington, MN and Mark (Roberta) Aswegan of Anoka, MN; 2 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 7 step great-grandchildren.

Gertrude’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 10:30 am at the Larsen Chapel at Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cedar Falls with visitation an hour prior (please use entrance #7). Burial will be at Garden of Memories in Waterloo with a luncheon to follow at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army and condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.

During her lifetime Gertrude operated a babysitting business, did ironing and sewing, and spent 35 years making and selling ice cream at Newberrys in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She enjoyed sewing for herself and others. Gertrude loved to go fishing with her sons and grandsons.
