Biography

John Albert Kincaid was born October 17, 1941, in Charleston, Mississippi, to Mose and Allie Pearl Kincaid. The Kincaid family moved from Charleston to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1944. John, the first born, was one of five children: Robert, Cynthia, and Gregory. Later, in Waterloo, Calvin Jones, was adopted and became the eldest son.

John accepted Christ at an early age at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Waterloo. In 1979, he joined the Antioch Trustee Board and in 1981 he was elected Chairman.
As a youth he attended, Grant Elementary, Logan Junior High and graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1960. John played football and was on the track team, but basketball was truly his sport. His mastery of the game allowed him to be become an All-State Basketball player. He, and his brother Robert, attended Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado on basketball scholarships.

After a major knee injury, John returned to Waterloo. Here, he began working for John Deere and became the first African American to complete the company’s Pattern Maker Apprenticeship Program. He also become the first Black Pattern Maker. Later he became the Shop Captain of Pattern Makers IAM. In 1999, he was awarded the John Deere General Manager’s Award. For a short time during John’s Deere apprenticeship, he worked as a Black Hawk County Deputy Sheriff.

John’s position at John Deere served as a catalyst to him becoming a leader in improving his community. In 1991, John coordinated the Paint Patrol, a group of employees who volunteered their time and money each year to paint the homes of low-income seniors in the community. John was known as a “great recruiter” because it was hard to say no when Big John asked for anything. John recruited volunteers and they met with the homeowners to go over the details of the project.

The John Deere Foundry Communication Committee was another of his volunteer projects. They donated over $10,000 annually to local organizations on behalf of the foundry employees in addition to the collection and distribution of Christmas food boxes to needy families in the Cedar Valley. In May 2002, John was selected to receive the Shining Stars Award from Governor Tom Vilsack for his volunteerism in helping Cedar Valley’s elderly community.

John’s leading role in the community eventually led him to public office. In 2003, Mayor John Roof selected him to fill Ward 4’s vacancy on the City Council. Waterloo’s council members approved his selection unanimously and he was sworn in on January 16th.

John had many hobbies as an adult. He played AAU basketball for several years. He had a dog for every area of hunting; Blue Ticks for Coon, Pointers for Pheasant and Quail, and Beagles for Rabbit and Squirrel. In additional to training the dogs, his backyard was home to horses, pigs, cows, chickens, geese and goats. And don’t forget about the acre of sweet corn and other vegetables which were shared with the community. In his younger years, you could find him riding his horses Ironside or Rusty in various rodeo events across the mid-west and as he became older the relaxation of fishing was a peaceful escape.

We were pleasantly surprised to know John was an organ donor. The Iowa Organ Donor Association said his donations will be a blessing to many families and individuals.

After making his mark within the community and as a John Deere employee, John finally retired after of 53-years of service.

John and Lynda (Armstrong) married in 1963. They were blessed with a son, Kevin Mark Kincaid, who passed shortly after birth. Later they received four additional blessings—Lisa, Kelli, Kristi and Jenni. Both John and Lynda prioritized the success of their children. They were committed to loving and supporting their children through all of their endeavors.

John married Susie Bell of Dayton, Ohio, in November 1990, and the blended family became six with two brothers; Tony and Mark.

John made his transition into God’s presence on Saturday, August 10, 2019. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Susie of 29 years, a brother Gregory Kincaid of Waterloo; sister Cynthia Harrington of Detroit, MI and sister-in-law, Judy Jones of Waterloo. Sons, Tony Holland and Mark Holland (JJ), both of Los Angeles, CA. Daughters, Lisa Kincaid (Walter) of Phoenix, AZ; Kelli Kincaid of Phoenix, AZ; Jozetta Burrell (Tony Sr.) of Des Moines, IA; Kristi Kincaid of Phoenix, AZ; Jenni Kincaid of Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Grandchildren, Ashley Staton (Channygn); Jalen Copeland, Blair Broady, Dominique Broady, Gabbi Kincaid, Bryce Broady, all of Phoenix, AZ; Antwonett Richie (Andre) of Engelwood, OH; Aaliyah Holland of Dayton, OH.

Great-grandchildren, Octavein Carlisle and Riel Easley both of Phoenix, AZ; Dr’eana Richie; Anonda Richie; Aniya Richie, all of Englewood, OH. Aliesha Holland; Razjana Holland; JaMere Holland; Jontay Holland; Parish Holland; Paris Holland and Aaliyah Holland all of Dayton, OH. Morena Holland of Los Angeles, CA.

Nephews, Barry Jones of Des Moines, IA and John Robert Harrington of Phoenix, AZ and Nieces, Carmen Harrington of Reno, NV; Deidra Greer of Waterloo; Hattie Willoughby (Heath), Chesterton, IN; Tamara Edmonds (Devin) of Pittsburg, PA; Judith Gandy of Syracuse, NY and host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son; Kevin Mark Kincaid, his parents; Mose and Allie Pearl Kincaid, brothers; Calvin Jones and Robert Kincaid, and brother-in-law, Gerald Harrington.

The family of John Kincaid appreciates each of you for your prayers, visits, phone calls, flowers, cards and the many kind expressions of sympathy shown. We will forever be grateful for all the love and comfort received during their hour of bereavement.
