Cedar Falls, Iowa – Dorothy Jean Brown, age 93, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, August 9, 2019 at Western Home Communities – Windhaven Assisted Living.

She was born July 30, 1926 in Bonilla, South Dakota, the daughter of Carl and Gladys (Rowen) Fritzsche. She graduated from Wessington Highs School in 1944.

On February 28, 1945, she married Edward Brown in Huron, SD. He preceded her in death on November 1981.

On June 21, 1988, she married Harold Brown in Wessington, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2005.

She was a farm wife and mother early on and worked as a secretary and eventually business manager for the Wessington Public School District in South Dakota, retiring after 23 years in 1988.

Dorothy was survived by a daughter, Nola (Jerry) Roitsch of Bristol, SD; a step-son, Steve Brown of Cedar Falls; a step-daughter, Denise Brown of Cedar Falls; a brother, Don Fritzsche of Huron, SD; six grandchildren, Lt. Col Kip (Scott) Reitz, Christopher (Amy) Bates, Kelly (David) Gregg, Jody (Andy) Conley, Corrie (Matt) Vihstadt, Kimberly (Kevin) Usery; two step-grandchildren, Jamie (Joe) Rocha and David (Amanda) Haddock; and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; a daughter, Connie Bates; a son-in-law, George Bates; a son, Lynn Brown; a step-daughter Cindy Flores; and by two sisters, Alice Walker and Linda Harper.

Memorial services will be 11am Wednesday, at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls. A gathering of friends and family will be from 4-7pm Tuesday, at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls.

Dorothy loved to read, sew, knit and quilt, gifting quilts to each grandchild. She loved music, playing organ and piano for church, and singing in the choir. She taught piano lessons after school to many kids in Wessington and Miller, SD. She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Dorothy loved traveling with both her husbands. She loved writing and arranging programs for Wessington celebrations.
