Obituary for Janice Spiegel Lucas Regan

Janice Spiegel Lucas Regan, 97, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, March 24 at Suite at Walnut Creek in Dayton, Ohio.

Jan was born February 6, 1922 in Davenport, Iowa to Edward L. and Hazel (Burgess) Spiegel. She was the fourth of six children, and the twin of James, who died in infancy. In 1933, she moved with her family to Waterloo, where she graduated from West High School in 1940. She married Robert Lucas on June 15, 1944 at Grace United Methodist Church in Waterloo.

Together, Bob and Jan had two children: Robert, born in 1945 and William, born in 1949. She took pleasure in being a proud mother, wife and homemaker for her family. Jan kept busy outside the home for 17 years assisting Bob with square dance calling until his unexpected death in 1968.

She worked in the office of Powers Manufacturing in Waterloo for several years.

In 1972, Jan married Francis “Bud” Regan, a widower, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. She shared a home with him and his daughter, Anne. Bud and Jan enjoyed hosting card parties, entertaining friends and dancing. They were involved in church activities and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Bud passed away in 1993.

Jan was an engaged member of both the Kimball Avenue and former Grace United Methodist churches. She delighted in her daily exercise routine, either walking or swimming and always had a great time bowling with her sister, Dorothy (Dort). Dort and Jan enjoyed many bus trips together through the YMCA.

Survivors include; two step-daughters, Jeanne (Gary) Heuer of Cedar Falls and Anne Kurtenbach of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters-in-law, Gale (Robert) Lucas of Surprise, Ariz. and Shirley (William) Lucas of Cincinnati, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and many niece and nephews.

Preceded in death by: her parents; husbands; two sons, Robert and William Lucas; five siblings, Edward Spiegel, Dorothy Novick; Richard Spiegel, James Spiegel and Barbara Ann Spiegel, and a special nephew, Larry Speigel.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 30 at Kimball Ave. United Methodist Church with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.
