Biography

Wendell E. “Wex” Wexter, 87, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at ManorCare Health Services in Waterloo on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, of natural causes.

He was born December 16, 1931, in Coggan, Iowa, son of William F. and Oma Gray Wexter. He married Betty Ann Tiggeman on April 23, 1955, in Waterloo. He graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1950.

Wendell was a driver with the Waterloo Fire Dept. for 13 years; then co-owner and operator of the 2nd Shift Bar, and a security officer for 20 years at John Deere retiring in 1994. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon, elder, and served on the Building and Grounds and Nominating Committees. He was a member and District Treasurer of Waterloo Exchange Club and a member of American Legion Post #138. He and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for 15 years. He volunteered with the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Wendell had a gruff exterior, but always tried to make pople smile and laugh. He considered himself to be a builder, enjoyed woodworking and was the architect of many in-home projects.

He enjoyed sports, particularly golf, tennis and bowling. He played in and umpired many slow pitch softball leagues.

His friends from the fire department and from First Presbyterian were very important to him. He cherished the friendships he made with many people over the years. Most of all, Wendell loved his family.

Wendell is survived by his wife; three daughters: Cindy Trepp of Waterloo, Vickie (Jerry) Nosbisch of Ionia, and Susan Wexter of Independence, MO; son, Randall (Sara) Wexter of New Lenox, IL; nine grandchildren: Zach (Megan) Nosbisch, New Hampton, IA; Josh (Bridget) Nosbisch, Waterloo; Katie (Preston) Mohlis, Lawler; Stephanie (Brad) Thompson, Cedar Rapids; Lucas (Courtney) Trepp, Elk Run Heights; Halligan (Matt) Lasky, Columbus, OH; Jenna (Ben) Bush, Davenport; Connor Wester, Chicago; and Michael Wexter, Malibu, CA; 12 great-grandchildren: Preston, Isabella, Carmen, Noah, Natalie, Alexis, Amelia, Jackson, Nora, Mya, Keira and Maxie; a half‑brother, Richard (Elsie) LeClere of Belvidere, IL; two half-sisters, Maxine (John) Wendell and Margaret Schultz, both of Belvidere, IL.d

He is preceded in death by his parents.
