Biography

Gene "Digger" Delagardelle, 85, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at Covenant Medical Center, in Waterloo, on Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

Gene was born July 17, 1933 in Gilbertville, son of Matt and Catherine (Federspiel) Delagardelle. He married Shirley Benson on August 20, 1952 in Waterloo.

Gene attended Our Lady of Victory Academy. He worked at Rath Packing for 33 years and Locke Funeral Home for 18 years. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Waterloo Elks Club.

Gene was a people person and a lot of fun to be with. He was a story teller, a kidder, and a bit mischievous. He was a big fan of John Wayne and ice cream. He was also a devoted catholic as you would see his PT Cruiser in front of church every morning for Mass.

Gene is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Roxanne (Dr. Eric) Willsky of Aspen, CO, and Nancy (Richard) Taylor of Waterloo; son, Dan (Mary) Delagardelle of La Porte City; five grandchildren; and his sister Norma Lovell of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by six brothers: Jerome, Anthony, Gerald, Louis, Roman, and Robert; and by four sisters: Rita Weber, Valeria Schmitz, Eileen Federspiel, and Camilla Weber.
