Helen Edna (Schortau) Rapp was born October 11, 1923 in Rural Westgate to George and Ella (Greening) Schortau. She attended both grade school and high school in Sumner and graduate with the class of 1941. After her graduation, Helen worked as a domestic servant until 1943 when she moved to Waterloo.

She then began working at Chamberlin’s where she met her husband: Otto Rapp Jr. The two were married on December 3, 1950 in Sumner. They welcomed three sons into their lives and Helen spent her time taking care of the house and her family. Helen loved baking and was known for her pies and Christmas cookies.

She also enjoyed sewing, mending, and growing produce. Once Otto retired, the couple spent much of their time traveling, including taking 10 cruises to many exotic places. Helen was also an extremely active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving in both DORCAS and Glowing Embers. She also was a member of the Chamberlin Retirees, who met once a month.

Helen Edna Rapp died on Sunday, November 04, 2018 at Western Home Communities—Deery Suites at the age of 95.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Otto; and five sisters: Iva Lawless, Mildred Wilson, Dorothy Sommers, Eleanor Gehrke, and one infant at birth.

Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her three sons: Russel Rapp of Cedar Falls, Kyle (Jackie) Rapp of Hampshire, Il, and Duane Rapp of Cedar Falls; two sisters: Alyce Pink of Phoenix, AZ and Edella Hohmann of Wheaton, Il; three grandchildren: Christopher (Abbi) Rapp of Pingree Grove, Il, Eric (Annette) Rapp of Elgen, Il, and Amanda Babitsch of Pingree Grove, Il. She is also survived by six great-granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons.
