Catherine Burnelle Kohlmeyer

Catherine Burnelle Kohlmeyer was born July 30, 1928, in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of George and Lorene (Mayton) Williams. She was raised and attended schools in Virginia. Catherine met Kenneth Kohlmeyer, a serviceman from the local Army Base, at a roller skating rink. The two were married on September 11, 1944, in Petersburg, VA.

Kenneth and Catherine moved to Iowa to be closer to his family and she stayed home to raise their five sons. She was later a salesperson at Sear’s for 21 years retiring in 1988 after arthritis made it too difficult for her to continue working.

Catherine was an active member at Zion Lutheran Church while her overall health allowed. She was a great cook, enjoyed making ceramics, reading, sewing and doing puzzles (jigsaw and word finds). Catherine also enjoyed the many dogs that joined their family throughout the years.

Catherine passed away at the age of 90 years on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at NewAldaya Lifescapes of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, Sr., who passed away in 1986; and her son, Kenneth, Jr., who died in 1969.

Catherine is survived by four sons: Bruce (Lauri) Kohlmeyer, Sr., Steven (Linda) Kohlmeyer, Sr., Brian (Jeni) Kohlmeyer, Sr., and George “Jeff” (Janice) Kohlmeyer all of Waterloo; a daughter-in-law, Martha Kohmeyer of Parker, CO; 13 grandchildren: Kenneth Kohlmeyer III and Karen (Warren) Ross of CO; Bruce Kohlmeyer, Jr., Scott (Bobbie) Kohlmeyer, Laura Kohlmeyer and Stephanie (Justin) Hurlbut all of Waterloo; Tracy (Anthony) Payette and Steven Kohlmeyer, Jr. of Waterloo; Brian Kohlmeyer, Jr. of Newton, Zak (Jordan) Kohlmeyer of Coralville and Juli Kohlmeyer of Waterloo; Lorel (Rod) Taylor of Virginia Beach and Traci (Jeremy) Johnson of Waterloo; 27 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and her very dear friend, Grace Sindlinger, who is 101 years old and still enjoyed many shopping trips, breakfasts and other adventures with Catherine.

Catherine will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorials may be directed to the family.
