Biography--

Lucille Catherine Laing, 97, of Waterloo passed away peacefully at Friendship Village Medical Center Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

Lucille was born the second of five children on the family farm in Victor, Iowa on November 20, 1920. Her parents were Clarence and Philomena (DeMeulenaere) Beran. She graduated from St. John School in Victor and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa. She entered the Navy as a nurse in 1942. She worked at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland and Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California.

She was united in marriage to Theodore "Ted" Laing December 5, 1943 at St. Joseph's Cathedral in San Diego. They eventually moved to Waterloo to be closer to family. She worked at Schoitz Hospital until retirement in 1982.

They raised four children and were faithful members of St. Edward Catholic Church for 65 years. Ted passed away in 2009. Lucille was a wonderful cook and her family remembers many picnics at Byrnes Park and in the backyard. She enjoyed bridge groups, book club participation, and golf with friends and Ted. They loved to travel in their retirement. She volunteered regularly at Schoitz Hospital. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her faith was unfailing, and she always showed us how to apply faith in daily life.

The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to Friendship Village friends and caregivers, Cedar Valley Hospice nurses and Locke Funeral Home for their loving care of Mom.

Lucille is survived by four children, James (JoAnn) Laing of La Jolla, CA; Linda (Wally) Narins of Rice Lake, WI; Catherine (Douglas) Brace of Waterloo; and John (Denise) Laing of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; 12 grandchildren; 24 great‑grandchildren: Sean Laing, Shannon (Nick) Alford and their children Ella and Finley Alford, Andrew (Carey) Laing, Katie (Dennis) Auth and their children Aiden, Lucy, William and Molly Auth, Christopher (Page) Narins and their children Lucia, Edward, Emelia, and Levi Narins, Markus (Mackenzie) Naris and their children Charlotte and Elanora Narins, Patrick (Cindy) Brace and their children, Kristian and Alexis Leonard and Jhori and Ari Brace, Jeffrey (Annie) Brace and their children, Eliza, Cooper and Kennedy Brace, Angela (Jason) Glynn and their children, Lucas, Anna and Connor Glynn, Bryan Nelson and his daughter Breanna Nelson, Brandon (Lora) Laing and their daughter Brooklyn Laing, and Brenton Laing; a sister-in-law, Madeline Beran of San Luis Obispo, CA; and six nieces and nephews.
