Walter J. Brockway

Walter J. Brockway, 89, of Waterloo, Iowa, died in Harpers Ferry, on Monday, September 3, 2018, of natural causes.

Walt was born on April 17, 1929 in rural Hawkeye, the son of Walter S. & Ruby (Sellers) Brockway.

He graduated from West Union High School in 1948.

He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War from January 6, 1949 until being honorably discharged on October 3, 1952.

Walt married Dorothy Mae Swender on March 9, 1952 in Waterloo; she died on June 30, 2014.

He worked as a Switch Foreman for the Illinois Central Railroad for 39 years until retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Harpers Ferry Boosters and the V.F.W.. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, watching and feeding the birds, playing horseshoes, and watching westerns. Walt loved following sports. He treasured his time at Harpers Ferry visiting with friends and family and would often cruise around in his golf cart.

Survived by his daughter, Joan; three grandchildren, Brandon (Lisa), Amanda, and Clayton; beloved puppy, Elon; many special nieces and nephews; and numerous friends in Harpers Ferry.

Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; four brothers, Raymond, Donald, George & Russell; and four sisters, Donna Senner, Imogene Scott, Carol Young, and Juanita Petersen.
