Jenessy “Sophia” Villalpando, 3, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, July 23.

Sophia was born September 8, 2014, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, daughter of Julissa Villalpando. Since the day she was born, she has won so many hearts of people. Sophia with her smile and personality could make all our problems go away. She was always so cheerful, full of life, and ready for adventure. She is and will always be the family sunshine. She will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Survived by her mother; maternal grandparents, Ruben and Lupita Villalpando; two uncles, George Villalpando and Ivan Villalpando; an aunt Marlene Cuanuhtenango

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, July 31 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 30 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on 400 South Street. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Waterloo toddler dies after accident on a Mexican carnival ride

WATERLOO, Iowa - A Waterloo toddler passed away after falling from a carnival ride in Mexico on July 23.

3-year-old Jenessy "Sophia" Villalpando was on vacation with her family in Penjamo, Mexico when she was ejected from the seat of the carnival ride she was on.

Sophia's aunt, Marlene Cuauhtenango told the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier that Sophia was not on her mothers lap during the ride and was not buckled correctly.

According to a GoFundMe page setup by the family, Sophia suffered a major head trauma that caused her brain to swell. She passed away at around 4 a.m. the following morning.

Sophia is the daughter of Julissa Villalpando and grandchild of Ruben Villalpando, owner of a El Sol Mexican Restaurant in Waverly and El Senor Tequila Nightclub in Waterloo.

The family's GoFundMe page will help cover the cost of transporting the girl back to Waterloo for services.
