Cleone Marie “Shorty” Read

Cleone Marie “Shorty” (Freet) Read was born on September 23, 1918, to Lyman and Mary (Martindale) Freet, in Traer. She attended schools and graduated from Cedar Falls High School.

On July 4, 1940 Cleone married James Read and the two spent 40 years together before his death in July of 1980. The couple welcomed two beloved sons into their family and Cleone was an extremely loving mother. Cleone worked for the majority of her life in the food service industry. Shorty was the cafeteria manager at Logan Junior High and retired after 27 years. Cleone loved to ride her bike and even went on a trip to Holland to explore the country on a bicycle. She also loved birds and reading.

Cleone Marie Read died on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at North Crest Specialty Care at the age of 99. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband: James; sister: Aletha Norman; son: T.J. Read; along with nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members. Cleone is survived by her son: Allan (Questeen) Read of Waterloo; two grandsons: Dale (Mary) Read of Waterloo and Styles Read of Waterloo; two great-grandsons: Keagan and Liam Read; and a special friend: Barbara Draper.
