Irwin O. Ellingson (1918-2007)

WATERLOO, IOWA - Irwin Olaf Ellingson was born in New Hampton, Iowa on April 20, 1918: the son of Ole & Christina (Halverson) Ellingson. Irwin was raised on a farm near Jericho and graduated from the New Hampton High School with the class of 1936. He farmed on the family homestead for six years before serving his country during World War II in the US Army.

It was in the service that he met Vivian Merritt, who was also in the service, and they were married on February 17, 1945, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. They resided in Waterloo and Irwin worked as an electrician for Rath for 35 years, retiring in 1981.

Irwin was a patient at Allen Hospital in Waterloo when he passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the age of 89.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vivian on March 19, 1992, a brother: Alvie, a sister: Marjorie Johnson and a son-in-law: David Byrnes.

Irwin's memory is cherished by a son: David (Sharon) of Webster City, two daughters: Constance Byrnes of Council Bluffs and Florine "Lori" Rule of Waterloo, five grandchildren: Brad Rule of Waterloo, Julie Rule of La Grange Park, Illinois, Andrew (Angie) Ellingson of Bettendorf, Peter (Elizabeth) Ellingson of Denver, Colorado and Benjamin (Alicia) Ellingson of Santa Fe, New Mexico, four great-grandchildren: Grant, Lauren, Rachel and Owen Ellingson and one nephew: Rev. Dennis (Susan) Johnson of Marion.

Services 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
