Black Hawk Co. investigating death of Dunkerton child

DUNKERTON -- Deputies are investigating the death of a child who died Wednesday.

The Iowa State Medical Examiner determined the preliminary cause of death to be sepsis, caused by acute peritonitis, caused by acute appendicitis. The results are pending the completion of toxicology tests.

The Sheriff’s Office said it closed the investigation after the autopsy results were completed.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, and is the most common abdominal surgical emergency in the U.S. If left untreated, the appendix can burst, releasing bacteria and leading to peritonitis, an inflammation of the tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen.

If peritonitis is left untreated, it can lead to sepsis, an infection throughout the body.
