Michael Kemp

Michael “Mike” John Kemp was born on August 6, 1946, in Waterloo, the son of Joseph and Sue (Quinn) Kemp. Mike graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Fairbank. He then attended Hawkeye Tech and received an Associate’s Degree in Engineering. Mike was drafted into the Army on August 2, 1966.

On October 22, 1966, he was united in marriage to Lee Ann Spence in Fort Polk, Louisiana, while he was in training.

Mike served in Vietnam for a year and was honorably discharged from service on August 1, 1972. He worked as a machinist for John Deere for 38 years and also farmed for many years. Mike and Lee Ann wintered in Ft. Myers, Florida for the past ten years. He was a member of the La Porte City Lion’s Club, La Porte City American Legion, and the Cedar Falls Amvets Post 49. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family and friends.

Mike died at the age of 71 on May 9, 2018, at Unity Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, following complications of pneumonia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Liz; and three brothers-in-law, John Spence, Don King, and Tom Kayser.

Mike is survived by his wife, Lee Ann of Dysart; a son, Rick (Sam) Kemp of Cincinnati; two daughters, Michelle “Tuffy” (Roger) Allen of Reinbeck and Heather (Andrew) Schrader of Urbandale; two brothers, Ed (Nancy) Kemp and Pete (Jan) Kemp; six sisters, Mary Jo (Dean) Hartley, Carole (Clair) Levendusky, Kathy (Don) Corcoran, Pat Kayser (Jack), Bobbie (Dick) Mason, and Annette Kemp (Larry); three grandchildren, Ainsley, Nicole, and Grady; a great granddaughter, Emma; a special uncle, Don Kemp; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Dysart Country Club. Military Rites will following. The family will greet friends following the service until 5:00 PM. Please direct memorials to Mike’s family.
