Obituary for Darrell Joseph Schmitz

Darrell Joseph Schmitz, 57, of Altoona, formerly of Gilbertville, died Friday, March 23 at his home in Altoona of natural causes.

He was born May 19, 1960 in Waterloo, son of Bertin and Bernice Welter Schmitz. He married Judy Becker on September 25, 1993. They later divorced.

Darrell graduated from Don Bosco High School. He was employed as a service technician for Hammer Medical Supply in Des Moines.

He is survived by his daughter, Zoe Schmitz of Altoona; seven siblings, Cindy (Bill) Bengston, Dan (Nancy) Schmitz, Connie (Bob) Steffen all of Waterloo, Donna Youngblut of Buckingham, Lisa (Dennis) Kayser of Jesup, Beth (Dennis) Wiebbecke and Jeff (Brenda) Schmitz all of Gilbertville; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers-in-law Richard Martin and Eric Youngblut; and a nephew, Curtis Barrick.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in Sancta Maria Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday at the Church in Gilbertville where there will be a 3 p.m. Catholic Order of the Foresters Rosary. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Tuesday. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the family or the Bosco System.

Darrell loved spending time with family and friends, especially his daughter Zoe and his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed playing softball, attending wrestling meets, and playing cards at Sambetti's. He was loved and will be missed by many.
