Joseph George Zeien

January 7, 1919 - March 20, 2018

Joseph George Zeien, 99, of La Porte City, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 20, at La Porte City Specialty Care Center.

He was born January 7, 1919, in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Pierre Zeien. He married Margaret Mary Welter on September 18, 1945, in Waterloo, Iowa, and she died February 26, 1998.

Joseph served in the United States Army during World War II. He owned and operated Joe Zeien Sand & Gravel until 1979. He enjoyed farming, until retiring in 2013.

Survivors include: his son, Thomas (Marsha) of La Porte City; five grandchildren, Sherri (Duane) Hopper, Melanie (Jay) Beans, Annette Zeien, Machelle Zeien, and Brian Zeien; two sisters, Loretta Courtney of Ottumwa and Barbara Nathanson of St. Paul, Minn; a sister-in-law, Rosie Marie Weber of Hemet, Calif; many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Anecia Strubel.

Preceded in death by two sons, Joseph and Michael Zeien; two brothers, Ralph and Henry Zeien; and by a sister, Theresa Kapler.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Westview Cemetery, La Porte City. Full military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post 207, assisted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services at the church.
