Barbara Sand

September 6, 1925 - March 3, 2018

Barbara Bischof Sand, 92, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed from this life at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on March 3, 2018, where she had resided since the spring of 2009.

Our amazing mother was born Mary Barbara Bischof in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on September 6, 1925, the oldest of six children of Harry A. and Helen Gardner Bischof. In order to distinguish her from her Aunt Mary Gardner, she always went by her middle name, and after her marriage, she went by Barbara B. Sand. She lost her mother at the young age of 10, and became a second mother to her younger siblings.

Two years later Eleanor Gardner became her stepmother. Barbara was a graduate of St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City. After two years at the University of Nebraska she worked as a secretary for Watson Trucking and Travelers Insurance, first in Nebraska City, and then in Omaha.

Barbara was united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City on August 17, 1950, to Bernard F. Sand. They resided in Omaha for 3 years, then Detroit for a year, then in California for 5 years, before settling in Waterloo in the summer of 1959. They lived at 1436 Kimball Ave. until moving into a smaller home next door in the spring of 2002.

Barbara was holy & prayerful, loving & encouraging, and conscientious to a fault. Her patience knew no bounds—she always put her own needs last, and the needs of her large family first, always. Her family’s memories of her could fill volumes. She was known for remembering the birthdays of dozens (if not hundreds) of people, and keeping up regular correspondence (that means letters) with many people. She played the piano, was a lover of art and history, and worked tirelessly for the Right to Life movement.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dr. Bernard Sand of Waterloo. She is survived by one sister, Madeline Gude of Hubbard, Iowa; two brothers, Larry Leonard Bischof (Patricia) of Roseburg, Oregon; and Thomas Bischof (Joan) of Hurst, Texas. She was predeceased by her parents and her stepmother, her brother Philip Bischof (Elaine, surviving) of Houston, Texas, and by her infant sister Rita Caroline.

Barbara is survived by her ten children: Sister Helen Sand, RGS, Paris, France; Mary Sand (Von Kaster), Ames, Iowa; Martha Christians (Gary), Lehigh, Iowa; Rita Maniotis, Berwyn, Illinois; John Sand (Melinda), Leawood, Kansas; Mark Sand (Rose), Omaha, Nebraska; Beth Giddens (Gary), Monmouth, Oregon; Paul Sand (Karen), Redwood City, California; Peter Sand (Diane), Urbandale, Iowa; Sara Sand, Marion, Iowa. She is survived by her 27 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, at St. Edward Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4-6:00 p.m. Thursday, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and 6:00 p.m. vigil. Burial will be Saturday, 11 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska.

Memorials may be directed to St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo, Iowa, or Iowans for Life.
