Ronald Dean Thompson

July 13, 1928 - March 2, 2018

Ronald Dean Thompson, 89, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, March 2, at Northcrest Specialty Care.

He was born July 13, 1928, on the farm in Wright County, Iowa, the son of Severin Notle and Rachel A. Gibbs Thompson. He married Helen L. Gage on June 6, 1948, in Waterloo and she preceded him in death on August 2, 2017.

Ronald attended Waterloo West High School. He was a polar owner/operator semi-truck driver with CRST, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O in Waterloo and Apache Junction, Ariz, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Teamsters Union, and received the safe driver award at CRST in 1984.

Survivors include his daughter, Zoe (John) Schaefer of Waterloo; three sons, Mark (Lenna Sue) Thompson of Delhi, Van (Janelle) Thompson of Viroqua, Wisc, and Jeff (Theresa) Thompson of Cedar Falls; eleven grandchildren, Trevor (Wendy) Thompson, Adam Thompson, Emily (Mitch) Tanner, Zane (Jess) Schaefer, Jacob (Carrie) Schaefer, Zachary Schaefer, Rachel Schaefer, Julie (Curt) Gleason, Dane Thompson, Andrea Thompson, and Michaelynn Thompson; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Gerald Thompson; and by an infant sister, Theresa Sebby.

Memorial Service: 1 pm Sunday, April 8, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 11 am until service time at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to Allen College for the Ronald and Helen Thompson Scholarship Fund for nursing.

Ron and Helen enjoyed many years together in Waterloo, Lake Delhi, and Apache Junction, AZ. Ron loved his family and friends and enjoyed traveling, playing golf, playing cards and boating on Lake Delhi.
